About Local Futures
Local Futures is a Canadian initiative dedicated to fostering sustainable, resilient communities across the nation. We believe that real change starts at the local level — by empowering communities to take control of their economic, social, and environmental future.
Our mission is to support grassroots projects, share knowledge, and build networks that strengthen local economies, protect natural resources, and enhance quality of life for all Canadians.
Our Initiatives
Local Food Networks
We help communities establish farm-to-table programs, community gardens, and farmers' markets that reduce food miles and support local agriculture.
Renewable Energy Co‑ops
Supporting community-owned solar, wind, and micro-hydro projects that provide clean energy and local jobs.
Skills & Knowledge Sharing
Organizing workshops and online platforms where people can teach and learn practical skills — from permaculture to carpentry.
Impact
Since 2015, Local Futures has:
- Supported over 120 local food initiatives across 8 provinces
- Helped launch 27 renewable energy cooperatives
- Trained more than 5 000 community members in sustainable practices
- Reduced carbon emissions by an estimated 1 500 tonnes annually through local action
